Music in the 5th Decade

Upcoming week April 28th: practice, practice, practice

  1. Piano practice, I've a show in June with master drummer Terry Clarke. Plus piles of student music to keep up.
  2. Drum practice, the summer whirlwind is nearly upon me. Heavy workouts on the basics: time, feet, feel, repertoire.
  3. Upcoming show with the my buddies the "Toronto Improvisers Orchestra.

Being a musician in 2019 is fun fun fun.

A lot of marathon runners access flow state. That's why it's so addictive: because they just get into this state where they're just completely one - they are in complete oneness. That's what happens to me when I play music and, I suppose, a lot of other people, too, which is why we do it.

Wednesday trio jam with Rory and Jim. I will be trying out a new cymbal combination. We are getting much more settled in our sound. Their feedback on my drumming progress is invaluable. Thank you guys.

Annette jazz jam this Thursday late. Drumming with skilled younger musicians is always a highlight of the week. It will be right after the big band rehearshal in Waterdown. Musicians have endurance.

Today I'm organizing my drum practice materials into monthly sets. Benny Greb recommends this, I'm willing to give it a go. And, get the studio wired up for easy recording. I plan to record drums with the drummer-less recordings of Benny Green.

I practiced 4.5 hours of piano last week. Yeah! My practice goal is 15 hours a week: 10 hours of drums, 5 hours of piano. My fingers are happy. What do I practice on the piano? Classical 90% of the time. Last week at Tim's jam the musicians could hear the difference in my jazz playing.

best,

David

A music and video project with drummer/sound artist Gordon Way and sound artist William Davison. I'm playing synthesizer and some drums. We've had two successful recording sessions, final one is next month and then the video portion. The music is very beautiful. I'm really thrilled to create with these two guys. Stay tuned.

  1. I'm looking forward to getting back into the improv scene. I've a few things to finish up in the next few months and then Bang!, I'll be back.

Another recording project of original music starts up in a few weeks with another group of musicians. Original music, notes and scores. We'll be testing the waters with a demo recording.

Next week I'll be sitting in on piano as a sub in a GTA big band. I'm using this opportunity to meet the drummer with the immediate goal of getting on the sub list and longer term finding a band to play in next September. In the meantime Terry Clarke and I are working hard on my big band skills.

Cheers,

David
