Music in the 5th Decade

Week of July 28th

Back in the saddle.

Wednesday: Recording and Jamming with my buddies William and Gordon. Free improvisation and video project, I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

Thursday: Rehearshal #1 with pianist Jacqueline Leung (http://jackieleung.com/) : piano and drums. Rehearshal #2 jazz quartet with Rory, Tim, and Roland. I'm on piano. Then late jam at Annette where I will pick up the mixed video of Rory Slater, Terry Clarke and me from June.

Saturday: Coffee and music with Glen Hall (http://www.glenhall.com/). Buddy catch up time.

I've a new page coming to the site, drum transcriptions. One goal of mine this year is a daily drum transcription, however small, that will be posted. These are quick and dirty hand drawn scores of what I'm practicing and listening to.

Cheers,

David Story

How I spent my summer vacation

  1. Drumming in New Orleans. Always a blast. I learned the importance of supporting the band by staying out of the way.
  2. Hooking up with drummer Lowell Whitty. He prepared me for NOLA. Now he's working on my inner funk. And, playing in a thoroughly modern style. Bring on QuestLove.
  3. Recording with my all my buddies. When I listen to the session recordings I'm reminded how lucky I am.
  4. Travelling with my lovely wife Heather. Louisiana and then 2 weeks at the cottage. Throw in her high school reunion for fun. It was fun, really. Oh, and a quick trip to Jasper and Banff.
  5. Big band camp was cancelled, the owner ran off with somewhere north of 250K. WTF! Thirty five years he runs it, then folds it 2 weeks for the start date and declares, "no refunds, money is gone".
  6. Practicing piano, I did miss playing piano. It's time to balance out the practice schedules: 2/3 drums, 1/3 piano. I've engaged two piano coaches: one classical the other jazz.  It will be a good year.

best

Week of July 14th: Time to recharge

Time to step back for a few weeks and spend time in the garden and take some time away from the fray.

Three musical activities over the next few weeks:
  1. Practicing Classical piano, with all the drumming it's been a little neglected. My survival depends on my skills at the piano. I will present a small program in early August to a classical music colleague for feedback. Time to get busy.
  2. Learn to program the UNO synth. This will be fun.
  3. Drum hands: rudiments and snare drum etudes.
  4. Bonus activity will be accompanying my wife's violin playing on my bass Uke.

See you all in a couple of weeks.

David

I'm looking forward to the next rainy day to get under the hood with the iPhone app. The front panel will get you started, but without the editor much is missing.
