CELEBRATES
Gwendolyn MacEwen
Sunday May 26, 8 PM Array studio

Picture
Picture

The Toronto Improvisers Orchestra
(TIO) celebrates Canadian poet and
author Gwendolyn MacEwen with a
performance of her verse- plays
for radio “Terror and Erebus” and
“Tesla”, with members of the TIO,
a score for Tesla by composer
Eugene Martynec and actors
Rod Campbell and Randi Helmers.
Tesla
Tesla is MacEwen’s play about Nikola Tesla
1856-1943. It was Tesla’s invention of the polyphase
alternating current system that was directly
responsible for harnessing the power of Niagara Falls.
He launched our modern era of Electricity,
Radio and Robots.
Terror and Erebus
Terror and Erebus are the two ships from the ill-fated
1845 British Royal Navy Franklin Expedition, recently
discovered south of King William Island in the
Canadian Arctic. Inuit knowledge was central to their
discovery. MacEwen’s play tells of their three years lost
in the Arctic described as “being an account of the
search by Rasmussen for the remains of the
Franklin expedition”.

Rod Campbell ~ voice, trumpet

March 2nd 2018 Glen Hall's "Rub out the word" released on Bandcamp
The Music Gallery will be releasing Glen Hall's performance of Rub Out the Word on March 2 on Bandcamp. I'm proud to have been part of it. Rub Out the Word: A William S. Burroughs Centennial Event is an extended multi-media performance work. It features an actor, an 11-piece orchestra, electroacoustic sound and visual projections under the direction of composer/Burroughs scholar Glen Hall. Hall uses Burroughs’ cut-up technique in creating compositions, electroacoustic sound montages, and text for the actor/narrator, all based on characters and scenes from “Naked Lunch”, “Nova Express”, “The Wild Boys”, “The Yage Letters” and “Last Words of Hassan Sabbah.”

What Is Freedom? (Resistance is Fertile!)
Bill Gilliam Art Ensemble
Saturday April 22nd, 2017 at 8pm
$20 / $10 students
Program
A performance of spoken word with composed and improvised new music inspired by texts and poems about freedom and resistance across time and cultures.
The poems in this performance are examples of how different international poets responded and gave courage to people resisting the types of autocratic forces similar to what we are currently witnessing.
The spontaneous music we perform in response to these poems is our creative way to energize and support the continuation of freedoms we currently enjoy. In the words of a banner from the January 2017 Women's March, "Resistance Is Fertile!".
