Music in the 5th Decade

Week of July 1st: A summer of piano

After drumming in New Orleans my goals for July are to practice classical piano. Fingers are feeling neglected. Secondly, maintain my tone and hands on the drum kit.

Highlights in July include jamming with pianist Jacqueline Leung. Piano and drums. Last week drumming New Orleans style, this week free improvisation. I love this career.

  1. Monday: Roaring through some jazz standards on the piano with my buddy Rory Slater on bass. Teaching. Trip to the physio therapist. I've got to stay whole.
  2. Thursday: session with an avant garde trio of noise/improv/electro musicians. I'm playing synthesizer.
  3. Friday: New Orleans class with Lowell Whitty. My Zutty Singleton press rolls are coming together.
  4. New Orleans repertoire and endurance building is the main focus of the week. New Orleans is coming up soon.

  1. My trio of drummer Terry Clarke and bassist Rory Slater performs this week at Annette Studio for my students. Jazz standards, Rory and I are so excited. Watch the video below of Terry playing with guitarist Jim Hall. You will see why.
  2. Learning 12 tunes for an upcoming workshop in New Orleans. I've scheduled some classes this summer there. I will be transcribing drum parts all week.
  3. Wednesday is jazz trio day with Rory and pianist Jim Finlayson. A bi-weekly highlight. Three friends playing jazz standards.
  4. Thursday night jam at Annette. Social night at the jazz bar. You never know who you will get to jam with.
  5. Friday, drumming lesson with Terry Clarke. Feed back from a master is the best form of learning. Call me "grasshopper".
  6. Friday night I may be playing in a big band as a pianist. That would be fun. It's been awhile since I've done that.
  7. Daily piano practice as well.

cheers,

David

  2. Sunday night: Photo/video shoot with William Davison and Gordan Way. We recorded the music now to match with video. Stay tuned.
  3.  Wednesday Jazz duo practice with Rory Slater. Preparing to play with drummer Terry Clarke next Sunday. Attending a piano concert for left hand featuring my former student and now musical colleague Adam Scime.
  4.  NOLA drum class with Lowell Whitty.
  5. Lots of piano practice this week. And, resting my drum poor arm.
